whether or not teens, tweens, and younger are officially "reading" if they're only doing it via the Internet

"Some Web evangelists say children should be evaluated for their proficiency on the Internet just as they are tested on their print reading comprehension. Starting next year, some countries will participate in new international assessments of digital literacy, but the United States, for now, will not."

This is an article about whether or not teens, tweens, and younger are officially "reading" if they're only doing it via the Internet. (It's an article from the New York Times.)

I'm not even sure what that would encapsulate. It was a treat when a computer was rolled into our class for 1 hour out of the day. That's when I was 9 years old. Now, kids at 9 are building their own profiles on networking sites, playing games + learning about their homework, and posting Youtube videos.

I am with the mind that kids should have online skills, as this isn't something that comes naturally to every generation. Making it into an exam scenario might offend the people who don't have computers, but that's even more reason to make sure online skills are up to date as technology becomes more complex.
