Geek chic and post-partum feminism.

Geek chic. That's all the rage this year, and although it's become quite a fad, there are truebies who have upheld it and will continue to do so. So I'll write a letter to someone who I think is really cool:

Dear Tina Fey,

When you were on SNL, I didn't really pay much attention to you. But I thought you were charismatic, hilarious, and sharp as co-anchor next to Jimmy Fallon and Amy Poehler at the news desk.

And when Mean Girls came out, I thought it was a stroke of genius. It made me fall for Lindsay Lohan, and it really said a lot about how girls treat each other, and the things that people and the environment do to perpetuate that cattiness. I like how you showed everyone's flaws--from the depracated teacher to the shunned newbie to the made-fun-of goth girl. We've all been there, done that, and dislike(d) ourselves but should really love those quirks and flaws in the end, because by the time we're en masse no one can pick us apart.

Thanks for being a part of that! Thanks for being the first female head writer on SNL! I didn't know that until after the movie. Thank you for posing very sexy-like in BUST magazine; although I'm trying to understand postmodern feminism, I think it's truly endearing that you embrace your inner geek and wear it on your sleeve. For the rest of us nerd-girls who never thought we were sexy, those pinups stood for our booksmart poses, too, and I can argue that those pics were representative of our intellect.

You did commercials for some credit card--which I don't care about as a product, but in them you demonstrated your daily life, its rituals, hassles and monstrosities. I'm glad you were juggling, because lots of us women do that, and it's refreshing to know that a cool girl is out there, even if she never lived by anyone's standards of what's normal.

In gratitude,
Me.
