Living with a Conservative Republican
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Last night in order to insult me, my Dad called me a "Socialist."

This has become the bane of my life. In high school, Dad got mad when I painted my nails black. Now that I'm a grown woman, he gets mad that I read Socialist magazines and defend Obama.

That's hilarious. My brother once referred to me as 'one of those granola eating hippies' because I was studying 'Global Development' at University.

Have You Tried Asking Him the Following Question ??

"Are we -- and the rest of the nation -- better off now than we were eight years ago ??"

AND

You can tell him you've already learned how to "speak Republican," and that you found it entirely unappealing:

How to Speak Republican

Have fun !!

Public and private ownership of resources
What about the fact that the USA already has some "socialist" elements? We have many public, rather than private, holdings: Public schools and universities, public libraries, national, state and local forests and parks, public hospitals, etc. These important and beneficial entities are present for the social good and are owned and administered by the public rather than private individuals or corporations.

@Laura : That's too much. When did even being a hippie become the worst thing in the world? Someone called me that because I rode the subway in NYC!

@Dave : His answer to that would be Yes. Except for Bush's overspending. He is very difficult to eat dinner with! The only time I out-argued him was when talking about feminism and Sarah Palin. That was a good win for me.

@Gregory : I thought it was "common knowledge" that liberals had socialist leanings! I agree, his policies should really come as no surprise. Sorry, this is going to turn into a rant, so I'm going to post instead as a blog. :) Thank you!

BTW, I do a lot of analysis of my Dad's ideologies because of his culture -- he's Cuban-born and paraplegic, and so is very independent-minded and resourceful. Whenever I argue about the Conservative majority and their intentions (which I typically base on capitalist wealth-building and popular religious-moral beliefs) I reconsider my Dad. Maybe he's atypical, but I think he's more so a Republican than many of the proclaimed conservatives. Because his family who came in as refugees have worked their way to citizenship, all within governmental regulations and the opportunity of freedom for actualization of a better life. I respect that, especially when I see his cousin, who now runs a farm outside of Tallahassee, or his aunt, who at the age of 70 finally decided that her Cuba-to-U.S. airplane ticket would be one-way only.

I can frighteningly relate!
Melissa, my father is a hardcore right-wing Conservative as well as an immigrant to the US who grew up in an Eastern bloc country under a Communist regime. As a result of what he experienced under a brand of communism that failed, he has made a swing far to the right believing only the Republicans far to the right preserve "the American dream".
At least you can have healthy arguments with your father. My father ends up with bruised feelings b/c he genuinely feels that I am in the school of "brainwashed libs" and is simply waiting for me to "grow out" of my lefty phase. When I try to tell him Obama is closer to the center than FOX News would lead him to believe, he simply scoffs at me and says "my poor little lost girl [who is now a grown woman]".

Oh yeah, and I guess I'm a hippie b/c I ride the NYC Subway everyday. Could be called worse things than all the above-mentioned!

@Natalie
I come home to FOX news every day! I'm sure they all think we're brainwashed--my dad told me to question even my professors when I got to university because they'd be liberal. ;P Which they were, but still. At least now, my dad acknowledges that Obama will likely win so he jokes about it -- like, he says he'll increase my rent if Obama's elected...because we have to "redistribute the wealth."
