No One Is an Island
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Younger, tougher,
I thought I could do everything
myself. No one
needed to be there for me,
to contribute, to lend
their generosity, accommodations,
anything,
besides books. I was an individual, a fortress,
I could do it all myself because never taking
meant never owing.

What have I learned since then?
I am not alone in so many ways,
that all I have to do is ask, and the answer
No is not a personal rejection. That if I ask
I may receive. I may have help
so I don't have to fight on my own,
or struggle, or even rejoice.

When it comes to corporate work,
I'm learning this slowly.

When it comes to volunteer work,
I am learning this quickly.

When it comes to activism,
I am learning this inevitably.

One could not come without the other.

Nice poem !!
Hi Melissa,

I had a good time reading your poem. I agree with all what has been said, for activism, you really need help from others and also team work is important. For volunteer work, I think it is also important to ask others and to help them as well. But corporate work does usually not respect this logic.

Do you want to continue our Poem without End at : http://projects.tigweb.org/elouarzadi by adding your poem ?

Thanks in advance !!

Thank you
Hi Yassir, thank you for the comments! It's nice to be encouraged.

I'll probably leave this poem here for now, but will contribute new verses to your site when they come to me. It's a good idea!
