:P So I guess I thought I was doing something subversive by renting a film called "A". Who knows what to expect: I knew it was a documentary about a cult whose leader was involved with a Tokyo subway gassing. Sounds interesting!

This "topic" was all the buzz at the time, because the cult (named Aum) was pretty private in its dispensation of information. So the media tried very hard to wring interviews, video clips, even pictures of the members, but the spokesperson, a prominently quiet and humble man, was a rational mediator between the clinging reporters and the secretive members. The only people really allowed to "penetrate" the cult were the documentarians who filmed this movie.

True to form, the film crew were nonpartisan, right down to a disturbing event involving a cop--yet, for a two-hour film, there were so many issues that I wanted to have answered. Not to make the filmmakers seem biased, but to give a historical context for the cult's situation, such as more background about Aum at the beginning of the movie.

I think this is an interesting film, in the sense that you get private entry to a Buddhist cult, hear their mindsets and see their actions, and have a nonobjective view about citizen outrage and the media colossus. Because it was in "real time" rather than "after-the-fact" film footage, we as the audience become just as surprised as the Aum members who uncover facets even they were unaware of.
